The year was 1976. Since we had never heard Brother Merle Bievenour preach, Evy and I packed up the family and we went to a neighboring church to hear him. The church was packed and the message timely. At the end of the service, Brother Merle called on me for the closing prayer. (In this particular church, they always knelt for the closing prayer.) Being fairly close to the front of the sanctuary, I casually slipped out into the aisle and positioned myself so that my body and voice would be directed to the back of the church and people would be able to hear. As I knelt there in the aisle, I tarried a moment until everyone was settled, and then proceeded to pray: “O Eternal God…”, when suddenly from the back of the sanctuary someone else began to pray. Wondering who it might be, I simply allowed the other person to proceed!
Now, the fact that I had been cut off so abruptly set the family to giggling. And the fact that I was out in the aisle made it even funnier. (I mean, should I stay there until the prayer was over? Or would it be better to quietly slither back to my original spot?) I did stay in the aisle, but the longer it went, the funnier it got! I discovered after the service that it was my cousin Carl Brubaker who had done my praying for me. (Unaware of each other’s attendance in the service that evening, Carl had misunderstood who was being called on for prayer.) To this day, every time our family thinks back to this incident, we laugh heartily about it!
Does God frown when we laugh? Some people seem to think so. (And their faces show it!) Yet The Eternal One inspired Solomon to write: “There is a time for everything…a time to WEEP and a time to LAUGH” (Ecclesiastes 3:1,4/NIV). God also inspired the Proverb writer with this thought: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22/NIV). Have we become so serious that we can no longer enjoy ourselves or others? True, life is serious, but some of us have become so uptight, so defensive, so grim, so intense, that our tolerance level leaves a lot to be desired, and many times our Christian witness is hindered.
So when’s the last time you enjoyed a good hearty laugh? Maybe it’s time to loosen up a bit! Laughter is, after all, one of God’s good gifts!
