Plato, the famous Greek philosopher (who lived several hundred years before the time of Christ) once quipped: “Wise men talk because they have something to say; Fools talk because they have to say something!” The Bible at various places warns us about the use of our tongues. A very pointed scripture is that of Ecclesiastes 5:3: “A fool’s voice is known by multitude of words.” The second verse of the same chapter says: “Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.”
Have you ever thought that perhaps the reason God gave us two ears but only one mouth is so that we would be hearing twice as much as we would be speaking After all, Jesus very definitely said that “Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:37). To me, that is a very sobering thought.
- Think of how many person’s reputations have been ruined by the slanderous words of your vicious tongue.
- Think of how many people avoid you, simply be cause they know that if you get ahold of them, they won’t be able to get rid of you (because you don’t know when to stop talking).
- Think of how the spirit of love and unity in the fellowship of the church is disrupted when people choose to close their ears and open their mouths.
- Think of how many persons have become discouraged in their faith pilgrimage because of some hasty, thoughtless word which escaped your lips.
- Think of the many people you’ve “turned off” because they know that in a conversation, you’re always talking about yourself.
Why is it that we think we must always be talking? Have you ever noticed that those who have nothing to say generally take the longest to say it? It is said that what some people lack in depth, they make up for in length, They just keep talking, hoping that they will think of something to say! Let’s be reminded of Jesus’ words when He said that “by our words we will be justified, and by our words we will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37). “To those who talk and talk and talk, this adage will appeal: The steam that toots the whistle, will never turn a wheel!”
