Everyone loves a worker. Even a mosquito gets a pat on the back when he starts working! An employment office was checking on an applicant’s references. “How long did this man work for you?” a former employer was asked. “About four hours,” was the quick reply. “Why, he told us he’d been there a long time,” said the astonished caller. “Oh yes,” answered the ex-employer, “he’s been here for more than two years! ”
Laziness and idleness are “bosom buddies.” They’re like peas in a pod. Man was created by God to work. Lack of industry and too much leisure time often lead to sin and misery. An old Norwegian proverb says that the lazier a person is, the more he plans to do tomorrow. It has been wisely said, “Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do.” God never goes to the lazy or to the idle when He needs workmen in His service. When God needs to have something done, He goes to the person who is already a diligent laborer. Scripture attests to this fact:
- Moses was busy with his flock at Horeb when God called him;
- Gideon was busy threshing wheat;
- Saul was busy searching for lost beasts;
- Elisha was busy plowing;
- David was busy caring for his father’s sheep;
- Amos was busy following the flock;
- Nehemiah was busy bearing the king’s wine cup;
- Peter and Andrew were busy mending their nets;
- Jesus was busy about His Father’s business.
We too need to be busy in attending to our Father’s business. With the time so short, and the amount of unfinished work yet so great, certainly there is no room in the Kingdom for a slouch. May we concur with the writer of Proverbs: “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazy fellow. Learn from their ways and be wise” (Proverbs 6:6, Living Bible). Laziness in the Kingdom is a “no-no”!
