Overheard were two ladies complaining to each other: “I can’t find anything in this store since they remodeled!” “What are you looking for?” asked the other. “Oh, nothing in particular, but if I were, I probably couldn’t find it!”
Oddly enough, that’s a pretty good description of the spiritual condition of quite a number of church members. Many attend Sunday morning services (as if that is God’s only requirement of us!); but if they were asked, “What are you looking for?”, they might answer, “Oh, nothing in particular ” The Scriptures very pointedly refer to such persons as “lukewarm” (“neither cold nor hot”), and the result of such spiritual neglect is that God will “spue them out of His mouth” (Revelation 3:16).
If “nothing-in-particular” describes your spiritual condition and involvement in the Lord’s work, you need a “shopping list” – a definite course of action to eradicate the apathy which has overtaken you. Your “shopping list” might include such things as:
- Attentively asking God to speak to you through the hymns which are sung, through the Scriptures which are read, and through the prayers which are prayed.
- Creating a prayer list, and carrying it with you as a reminder throughout the day to hold those persons and situations “before the Throne”.
- Determining to visit at least one person a week who is in need of your support or comfort.
- Systematically taking time each day to study the Scriptures and to meditate upon them. It will also be beneficial to memorize portions of Scripture, and thus “hide God’s Word in your hearl.” – Quietly sharing your faith with a neighbor, a fellowlaborer, a friend, a family member, or a stranger. – Asking your minister what you might do to ease his load, or to help in the work of the Church (he may faint, but give it a try anyway!)
If you seek “nothing in particular” in your Christian pilgrimage, then that’s exactly what you’ll find“nothing in particular”. Create a spiritual “shopping list” and stick by it!
