After many years of ministry, I need to remind myself that what proved effective before, may not work again. For example, I may use certain wording in my prayer at an anointing service, and the person is miraculously healed. My tendency is then to want to turn that successful prayer into a FORMULA. It’s easy to put my confidence in formulas, or in traditional ways of doing things. If it worked before, surely it will work again. The danger in that type of thinking, however, is that I may no longer be open to what the Father is telling me. We need fresh evidence of God’s presence from time to time.
The seven sons of Sceva (Acts 19:13-16) thought they had discovered the RIGHT FORMULA for casting out demons. Exorcists by profession, these seven men of Ephesus were all sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest. Impressed with Paul’s ability to heal, the sons of Sceva tried to use Jesus’ name as a MAGIC FORMULA. One day they said to a demon-possessed man, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out!”
What impresses me is that they got the right name–“Jesus.” They even had the right Jesus–the one “whom Paul preaches.” Also, they had the right command–“Come out.” According to the FORMULA, they had everything right, but the demon didn’t come out. Instead, the evil spirit (using the man he had possessed) leaped on the seven sons of Sceva with great fury. The seven ran for their lives, naked and bleeding!
The point is this: The seven sons of Sceva had the RIGHT FORMULA, but they didn’t have the RIGHT RELATIONSHIP. Jesus reminds us: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
We do not simply go around praying the right words and shouting the right commands, and expect results. Jesus got results because He was in RELATIONSHIP with the Father, and we must follow suit. Jesus must be our MODEL, not our FORMULA.
